The NRA Defensive Pistol Course is the NRA's premiere dynamic defensive pistol course that not only focuses on the development and refinement of proper defensive and concealed carry techniques but also cultivates the proper defensive mindset and then tests those skills in a timed and scored live course of fire.

Conducted by a select group of NRA approved "Advanced Pistol Instructors", the class will be run by Master Trainer Charles Lehnert, CEO of Personal Protection Institute and co-developer of the NRA Defensive Pistol curriculum and Instructor José Morales, lead instructor and owner of Philly Firearms Academy.

The goal of this 8 hour course is to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to carry and use a concealed pistol ethically, responsibly, and confidently and consists of 4 hours of classroom work, 4 hours on the range and a live fire shooting qualification which must be successfully completed in order to be awarded the NRA Defensive Pistol certification.

Students must provide:

  • Proof of successful completion of the NRA Basic Pistol Course or its equivalent
  • A quality pistol appropriate for concealed carry – minimum of 9mm or .38 Special
  • A quality strong side hip holster – form fitted leather or kydex, must cover trigger/trigger guard
  • A quality gun belt, designed to secure the weight of a holster and a firearm
  • Quality factory ammunition suitable for practice – 200+ rounds
  • Spare magazines or speed loaders with appropriate pouches and at least two spares
  • Clothing appropriate for concealed carry (no open toe shoes or low cut shirts)
  • A concealment garment (shirt, vest, etc.)
  • Eye & Ear protection

Topics covered include:

  • The importance of carrying and using a pistol responsibly and ethically for personal protection
  • How the NRA Rules for Safe Gun handling are applied to concealed carry
  • Basic principles of concealment
  • The importance of mental awareness
  • Mental preparation and developing a defensive mindset
  • Techniques for avoiding life-threatening confrontations
  • The psychological and physiological changes that may occur during an attack
  • Flash sight picture
  • Reloading under stress
  • Clearing common stoppages and immediate action drills
  • Proper pistol presentation and re-holstering with and without concealment
  • Proper use of cover and concealment
  • Proper target engagement at varying distances
  • Moving off the line of attack and shoot
  • Choosing and using pocket pistols and back-up guns
  • NRA Defensive Pistol live fire shooting qualification course of fire
  • All course training materials are included and lunch will be provided

Note: Candidates must satisfactorily complete NRA Defensive Pistol course of fire and receive the endorsement of the NRA Training Counselors in order to qualify for the NRA Defensive Pistol certification.

The FBI puts an emphasis on close-quarters combat to reflect the overwhelming number of incidents in which suspects are confronting their targets at point-blank range. We are proud to offer to you the opportunity to put the defensive handgun skills you learned in day 1 to the test and see if you have what it takes to pass the very same shooting qualification exam that is given to FBI cadets! This 3 hour workshop will consists of 1 hour of classroom and 2 hours of range time, culminating in the FBI Qualification Certification.

  • The target used is the QIT-99
  • Course consists of a total of 60 rounds shot over 5 stages
  • 2 handed, 1 handed and weak handed shooting is required
  • Each round counts as one point
  • Only hits inside the target area count
  • All draws from the holster must be from concealment
  • Passing score for is 48 out of 60
  • Certificate of completion is awarded

The target used for the new FBI Qualification course of fire is the QIT-99, a modified version of the old “Q” target.

Scoring: Shooters receive 1 point for every round that lands inside the Q bottle. Shots that break the outline of the bottle count. The course of fire is 60 rounds and agents must shoot 80% (48 hits) or better to qualify. Instructors need 90% (54 hits).

Course of fire:A fantastic way to test your skills and identify your weaknesses, the FBI Course of fire requires 60 rounds total, requires all draws from the holster to be from concealment. All hits in the bottle count as one point, with 48 out of 60 total points being a passing score. This video demonstrates the course of fire.
